Many popular diet plans include foods that contain toxins like aspartame, MSG, and GMOs. And as we already know, an unhealthy program will only lead to unhealthy weight loss. Ideal Protein, a doctor derived weight loss protocol that transforms the body’s ability to metabolize sugar, is now offered through Virginia Cardiovascular Specialists.
For the body to function properly, it draws energy from fat, protein, and glycogen reserves (what we commonly call carbohydrates). Our bodies are also designed to protect us in time of famine and store up to 3 days of carbohydrates at a time. This is unfortunate for those that are trying to lose weight as those 3 days of glycogen or carbs must be burned prior to fat stores being touched.
Ideal Protein works by safely putting the body into a state of ketosis, where, because the system lacks glucose, it generates ketones, which are substances that cause the body to burn fat. This is where most other “low carb” diets have failed, because people would adopt a high protein diet, lose weight, but then gain the weight back when they reintroduced carbohydrates back into their diet.
Ideal Protein is a 4-phase protocol that trains the body to create the correct amount of insulin, metabolize sugar effectively, and preserve vital organ function and muscle tissue. It is a safe, effective weight loss method for many people. Its effectiveness is based on creating a state of ketosis in the body (basically robbing the body of all carbohydrates) to force fat burn and weight loss. The program only keeps the body in a state of ketosis for a short time, therefore it is not harmful or dangerous.
The Ideal Protein plan is safe for most patients, including those with Type II Diabetes. The exceptions to this include a few different subgroups:
Of course, a physician must consider the patient’s entire medical history when prescribing the program.
A person interested in the health benefits associated with Ideal Protein will first make an appointment with a cardiologist or vascular physician at VCS. After blood work is analyzed, the patient is referred to a health coach to discuss/ start the Ideal Protein protocol. The patient will visit with the health coach every week to be weighed and measured. Based on the patient’s health history and condition, blood may also be drawn throughout the 4-phase protocol. The doctor and health coach will manage the patient’s condition, making sure the kidneys and pancreas are functioning properly, and that the patient is staying healthy and hydrated. These check-ins with the office are also helpful in keeping patients on the plan, which is a multi-stage protocol.
Once the doctor has signed off on the Ideal Protein protocol and the health coach has explained the plan, the patient will begin phase I. Phase I lasts until the ideal weight is reached and involves eating an Ideal Protein product for breakfast, lunch, and bedtime snack with a healthy dinner of the patient’s choice. The patient will take supplements like Omega-3, and because no dairy is included in the program, a Cal-Mag supplement. Four cups of vegetables and two salads per day, along with an 8 ounce serving of protein at dinner are included in the daily diet. In addition, the patient will consume 2 tsp of olive oil and ¼ tsp Ideal salt to make sure his/her body is getting the proper nutrients.
Phases II and III are 14 days, respectively, and in the final phase, the patient will be tapering off the Ideal Protein products. By then, the body will have retrained itself to process glucose optimally, and the weight should stay off.
This is a program that can only be prescribed by certain doctors in the U.S. and Canada.
